Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear by Max Lucado

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

All my life I’ve been paralyzed with fear and worry (they always seem to go together, don’t they?).I was afraid to learn how to drive,it seemed so scary–but I did it and after a few tries (long story) I now have a driver’s license.I was afraid something would go wrong when I was expecting my son and I was worried I would never ever in a million years be able to give birth to another human being–well, nothing went wrong and I delivered a very healthy baby.I worry about bills each month and yet, month after month the bills have been paid even when I’ve had to pull the rent out of a hat at the very last minute.I could go on and on about the things that keep me tossing and turning each night but I am here to talk about a break through I had courtesy of a wonderful book titled Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear by Max Lucado.

In Fearless,Max Lucado dares you and I to literally imagine our lives without fear. What would you set out to accomplish if you didn’t let fear paralyze you?In today’s world when it seems like everything around us is falling apart and everyone’s situation seems even more hopeless than ever before,Max Lucado,in his wonderfully written book offers us a glimpse of hope and reassures us that there is really nothing to be afraid of.Everything will be okay if only we learn to trust in a much higher power and believe in ourselves long enough to let go of fear and live our lives to the fullest.

Fearless couldn’t have been written at a better time.I honestly believe everyone out there — christian,muslim,atheist,black,white,green,whatever..everyone needs the message this book delivers.I also agree whole heartedly with Max Lucado, the best way to beat fear is by doing..take action.Whatever your fear is,by facing it,analyzing it and taking action, you will not only conquer that fear but you will triumph!I give Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear two very big thumbs up and I highly recommend it.

Rick & Bubba’s Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Its safe to assume that I’m definitely not the person Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey had in mind when they set out to write Rick and Bubba’s Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage.I have read so many books on marriage and relationships and I have to truthfully say this is the most childish book on the subject that I have ever encountered.Maybe I just don’t get Rick and Bubba’s humor, maybe I got bored with all the hunting references, maybe I just didn’t see the point of the whole book period.

Rick and Bubba’s Guide to the Almost Nearly Perfect Marriage started off as a potentially good book on what it takes to make a marriage work but somewhere along the way,the authors lost focus and derailed into defensive guy mode and then it was all downhill from there.I don’t recall the last time I was this disappointed in a book but then again,I’m not in the typical “Rick & Bubba” target age group so maybe I just didn’t “get” and appreciate their humor sprinkled throughout the book.

Personally I don’t believe in the institution of marriage although I am a strong believer in the family concept (whatever your idea of family is – two parents raising kids, two people who decide not to have kids, single moms, single dads, same sex couples with kids, same sex couples without kids etc, etc)…to that end,I was really impressed with how much emphasis the authors placed on the value and importance of the family unit.I was genuinely moved by how dedicated the authors seem to be to their families so maybe they should consider writing books about families as opposed to writing books about marriage…just a thought;)

The I Believe Bunny

Friday, July 24th, 2009

The I Believe Bunny story book landed on my doorstep at just the perfect moment. Its just the kind of book I was praying for when I decided to introduce my overly curious toddler to God and prayer.

The I Believe Bunny is not just beautifully illustrated but it is an invaluable tool that provides lots of “teaching moments” for kids.It actually opened dialogue between my toddler and I about the importance of prayer, the importance of never giving up,the importance of team work and the fact that we’re never alone in our struggles and the importance of always being open and willing to help others.

I’m positive as a parent (or guardian) you too will find tons of valuable lessons as you read this book to and with your child.I’m also positive that The I Believe Bunny would make the perfect gift for children of all ages which is why I’m throwing my weight behind this book and giving it two giant thumbs up.

More Than Me

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

If I were a marriage counsellor,I would make More Than Me: The 4 Essentials of Relational Wholeness mandatory reading for all couples that walked through my office door.Actually, the good thing about this book is that your marriage doesn’t have to be in trouble for you to benefit from it.More Than Me is ideal for any couple that desires to have a strong and healthy partnership that can withstand the unavoidable trials we all face.

More Than Me is filled with biblical references which might be a turn off for some and thats understandable but do yourself a favor and read it anyway. The book is so deep to where you’ll find yourself compelled to read it not just once but twice and maybe even thrice.I love how the book tackles topics like forgiveness, love and tolerance without being self-righteous and preachy.

The path to a healthy relationship definitely starts with More Than Me.

I’ll Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I normally stay far away from business books because I honestly don’t believe any sane successful business person would freely and so willingly share the secrets that made them successful in the first place but I have to admit, even I couldn’t resist Michael Franzese’s I’ll Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse : Insider Business Tips From A Former Mob Boss.I didn’t know who Michael Franzese was but as soon as I saw the title of the book,I was sold.

I’ll Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse : Insider Business Tips From A Former Mob Boss doesn’t promise to make you rich overnight. Its more of a straight talk,no nonsense approach to starting and surviving in business.Michael Franzese pulls no punches as he recalls his past experiences in the mob and how the lessons he learned from that life can be used in running a perfectly legitimate business. He doesn’t reveal anything new that you and I haven’t heard a million times before but his book is worth a look because of how he manages to drive his points home and cleverly dispense his tips with almost perfect comedic timing without losing his serious business-like tone. This man has lived on both ends of the law and he has written a magnificent business book about how good (aka doing things legally) always triumphs over bad (aka taking the easy and often illegal way out) in the business world.

The beauty of I’ll Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse : Insider Business Tips From A Former Mob Boss is its such a simple book thats appropriate for anyone and when you look deeper into it,you’ll discover,Michael Franzese’s tips don’t just apply to the business world alone, they apply to each and every aspect of our lives.

Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World is a very colorful, fun fact filled children’s book thats rich in photography and fun stories of Jack Hanna’s adventures and interactions with wild animals.

The book will satisfy your little one’s curiosity and while some animal names might be a bit tough for the younger kids to pronounce,Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World is a great investment that will grow with your child and with time and regular reading, your kids will get comfortable with names. There is also a glossary at the end of the book that will definitely come in handy.

Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World makes learning fun and is perfect for reading before or after a visit to the zoo.Better yet,why not carry the book with you to the zoo so you can point out the animals to your kids and read them the fun facts while they look directly at the animals?

Sadly, Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World ends just as you’re really getting into it but thankfully it comes with a CD of Jungle Jack’s blunders, bloopers and behind the scenes adventures.

Overall,Jungle Jack’s Wackiest, Wildest, and Weirdest Animals in the World makes learning about animals fun and its an awesome book that both parents and kids will enjoy.

Face of Betrayal – Lis Wiehl with April Henry

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Bill O’Reilly and I finally agree on something… Lis Wiehl’s Face of Betrayal is a blast to read. The cover artwork is what attracted me to the book but its the fast paced action inside that kept my eyes and fingers firmly glued to the pages inside.

Face of Betrayal is a political thriller about a senate page who goes missing on her christmas break and the Triple Threat Club (a federal prosecutor, a crime reporter and an FBI special agent) who take it upon themselves to try and find the missing girl in the midst of the media circus created by the revelation that the missing senate page was having an affair with a much older senator.

It is one of those gripping books you will not want to put down the second you read the first line. You will get so attached to the characters, you’ll feel as if you’re there for every twist and turn they take.

My only gripe with the book is the ending. In my opinion it was kind of weak. The book is so fast paced,I expected a big dramatic ending but I was disappointed with the way things unfolded. It also got a bit too busy at times with the authors trying to give us a glimpse into the lives of all the characters. But overrall the authors did a good job writing an interesting thriller.Lis Wiehl’s Face of Betrayal is definitely worth a read.
